Biography

Noelia Abreu is a contemporary visual artist born in the Dominican Republic and currently residing in Westchester, NY. She is a primarily self-taught multi faceted artist, having used photography, sculpture, illustration and painting to channel artistic expression. Her work lives between softness and strength, fantasy and reality. Through painting, drawing, mixed media, and digital art, she creates expressive figurative works inspired by emotion, femininity, spirituality, and transformation. Her art blends surreal imagery, symbolism, and portraiture to tell stories of identity, vulnerability, beauty, and duality that creates visual spaces that feel intimate, mystical, and emotionally alive. In addition to participating in several group exhibitions, she has also held a solo exhibition as well as one curatorial endeavor.

Artist Statement

While I do not impose an exact interpretation of most of my works, each work is developed with a specific emotional frequency which may be expressed by colors and perhaps not the initial subject matter. My current body of work is moving toward exploring the manifestation of feminine and masculine energy outside of a sexual context and without objectifying the figure or defining individual or gender identity, with a background of god/goddess worship through a contemporary lens. As a figurative oil painter, I work in layers which allows me to achieve a luminous painting with depth that is a clear representational image for the viewer.
